Building a mood board

Art

Hello all, Tiffani here. Today I want to talk about building a mood board!

First of all, exactly what is a mood board? A mood board as a tool which conveys ideas and concepts in a visual way. Think of it as a giant collage where you can collect pictures that help create a certain atmosphere, feeling, or mood that you want to convey regarding a certain topic. You can create mood boards for just about anything!

This can be helpful for both artists and story tellers. You can create mood boards for characters, locations, cultures, objects, and more! Mood boards can be help you stay on track in terms of keeping things cohesive in your story telling or visual art, or they can be used to show what your ideas and concepts are to people you are sharing your work with. Here are some mood boards that I’ve created. These are for characters from my story; Jaren and Songbird have their own mood board. Some people like to keep things strictly visual and only use pictures and drawings*, but I like to add notes and thoughts on mine, as you can see below.

*If you do use someone else’s artwork in your mood board, always be sure to try to find out who created the original artwork and keep track of which art they did. Generally mood boards are for personal use, but if you share your mood board please remember: Never claim artwork that isn’t yours as your own, and always be sure to credit an artist. Further, if an artist asks you to remove their artwork from your publicly posted mood board, be sure you be respectful of them and do so.
