Vin Cosplay and Mist Cloak

Hello Dear Reader!

Today I wanted to share how I made my mist cloak for Dragonsteel con, as well as all the parts for my Vin Cosplay. It was my first cosplay, and I have a lot to learn, but it was a ton of fun. I saw so many amazing cosplays, and there were several very cool mist cloaks. So this is of course just one way to make one. And probably not the easiest way. But it was what I could do in a pinch. I’m currently working full-time at my healthcare job, plus working on writing a fair amount as well. So many of the items were purchased, but I like supporting other authors, artisans, and artists. So win-win for everyone. I’ll give a shout-out with all the links later in the post.

I used a pattern for the top part of the cloak, Simplicity Pattern S9008 and used a combination of C and D to get the capelet part of the cloak. I used plain cotton fabric, grey for the outside and black for the lining. We sewed the entire thing minus the bottom seam.

From there I glued all my ribbons to one piece of ribbon. I ended up having to order bulk ribbons on Amazon, and I went through something like 60+ yards of it. We then sewed the ribbon into the bottom seam.

This is the first attempt, I ended up having to scrap this one and do a second one because of running out of certain colors of ribbon and not being able to get more/enough in time.

Alright, with the cloak out of the way it’s time to assemble Vin’s outfit!

It’s been a minute since I’ve read Mistborn. But I remember Vin running around in her bare feet. I didn’t exactly want to run around the convention center in my bare feet, so I got the most minimal sandals I could think of.

A - Xero Shoes makes a DIY huarache style sandal, which seemed like a good option. (Plus I just like their shoes.)

B - These are some soft leather bracers I got a the Colorado Renaissance Festival ages and ages ago. I looked to see if I could find the vendor, but I’m not sure they’re still there. They seemed like a fitting addition to the outfit, and especially because on Scadriel, the less metal you wear, the better.

C - Vin’s obsidian dagger. I purchased this from Wolfscosplay on Etsy. It’s made from an epoxy resin so it’s lightweight and not sharp.

D - Vin’s allomantic metal containers - purchased from Discombobulous on Etsy. It arrived safe and sound from the UK and is of great quality. I really like it.

E - Plain linen shirt. Seems like the type of thing Vin would wear when she’s out prowling the streets of Luthadel after dark. The shop I purchased this from is no longer in business.

F - I repurposed this from another Renaissance Festival outfit. I wanted to try to find a leather kidney belt, but could not afford one and did not have the time to try to make one. This matched the color scheme and kind of looked a little misty. I bought it from The Frock Shoppe at the Colorado Renaissance Festival. (Are you seeing a theme here yet?) They were not at Colorado Ren Fest this year, so I’m not sure if they’ll be back, but I think their home Faire is Texas. To my knowledge, they don’t have an Etsy shop, but you can find them on Facebook. I have many, many pieces from their shop I’ve gathered over the years they make quality pieces that really last.

G - Pants! I wanted a very specific style of pants for this outfit. I found these by Calvina on Etsy. They’re from Turkey. The item arrived safe and sound, and the quality is awesome. These pants are very durable and are going to last me a long time, so expect to see them again in other outfits. They’re a little big for me, and I probably could have gotten away with a small, but sizes are always weird and I tend to fall in between sizes most of the time, so I’d rather go too big than too small.

And now… the results!

Well, what do you think? Do you think I missed anything specific from Vin’s Mistborn outfit? What should I improve upon for next year? Let me know what you think in the comments!

Till next time dear reader, have fun creating and crafting. And remember, if you don’t have time or if you don’t feel very crafty, it’s also totally fine to support artisans and crafters who make their living making these things! I think after this post Blacksteel will be going on our holiday hiatus, so we won’t be posting again until January. I hope you all have a wonderful and restful holiday season, and I hope to catch you all on social media. See you all in the new year! <3 Tiff
